Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Facebook is finally working on a “Dislike” button.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,” Zuckerberg said during a Q&A at Facebook’s headquarters.

The social network users who have taken to Facebook have been demanding it for years now. Finally people will see a “dislike” button. This will provide another option for the users where they can clearly state their views. Although many users would like to have a dislike button but how many of them would like their posts/photos or views disliked. Probably there are few. Also the organizations who are putting up their advertisements and promotions would not like to get dislike votes. It is true that a dislike would prevent users from posting any distasteful items and foolish things, but they would also become more cautious about posting anything on their page. This is also discouraging for the users. It might spread negativity. A negative comment or criticism can still be provided against any post. But such comments or judgements often have counter arguments associated. But a straight dislike is very direct and opinionated and might create a critical emotion in the mind of the poster.

The above view is true. Social media can be addictive and might have several critics against it. Also sharing is good, but we are not cautious about what to share, with whom to share. But it has several benefits where public opinions can be created, where campaigns can be organized against social wrong doings – only thing is that we need to be responsible while using it. Once we are responsible, a dislike button will not be required.

Unfortunately, I am a person who believes in “Staying Disconnected” in this connected world. I don’t have an account in social media sites and yet I sound like an expert here – what an irony!!
