Last week a video of an army jawan went viral on the social media. Lance Naik Yagya Pratap Singh is seen alleging his superiors of harassment for writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the problems faced by soldiers. Lately, many such instances have occurred wherein soldiers have been facing issues like bad quality of food and mistreatment by superiors.

There is an existing system of grievance redressal within the army which is claimed to be prompt. However, if the system fails, the soldier can directly contact the army chief through WhatsApp through the number +91-9643300008. Although this is a good initiative, there is no way to prevent unwanted messages as the number is in public domain. More attention should be paid to the needs of soldiers and special teams addressing issues faced by them are required. After all, the army represents nation’s strength and defense system and the social media outcry is affecting the morale of the army.
