In the recent times sexual assaults against women have been on a rise in India. There are several reports, social media postings, videos, and images of women being groped on crowded buses and trains. The situation for women is no different in flights, there were several allegations that a number of women were groped by male travelers during their travel in flights. In the light of these events Air India has launched female only seating for solo women travelers. At present, this policy will only affect domestic flights operated on the Airbus A320 aircraft and will be available without any additional fees. After measuring its effectiveness on domestic routes, the airlines may extend the new seating configuration to international flights.
Air India also has recently announced that it would be keeping restainers in the form of small plastic handcuffs on board all flights to keep disruptive unruly passengers firmly seated if their behavior threatens the safety of other flyers. Both these announcement can be seen as the attempts made by Air India to rebuild its reputation, as a safe airline for women, after the string of incidents which tarnished the carrier.
