It seems like getting a reservation is the new fad or a moment of pride. At least this is what the current environment in the country speaks. First, it was the Patels in Gujarat. Then it was the Jats in Haryana. And now the latest entrants to this list are the Brahmins in Tamil Nadu. A section of Brahmins in Tamil Nadu are asking for reservation in Government jobs and educational institution. With barely a month left for the state election, this new development is definitely going to add a new dimension to the politics in the state.
People are resorting to violence, hooliganism and are damaging public property and lives to get their demand accepted. The government in Haryana had to budge into the demand of Jats in order to maintain peace and order in the state.
With one after the other community demanding reservation, we should ask ourselves how much aware are we towards the need of reservation. Reservation can either be based on caste or the economic status. Pragmatically understanding, the caste based reservation should be provided to the communities who have been economic, social and physically oppressed and hence did not have any means of growth. However, this understanding seems to be lost and people are vying to get the reservation just for the sake of benefits it provides. Many tribal areas of India are not even aware of their right of reservation, using it is a distant thought. While on the other hand, the 2nd and 3rd generations of beneficiaries of reservation are still savoring the benefits of reservation. Also, the political parties have smartly used the reservation debate for vote banks.
Definitely, there ought to be flaws with our current reservation policy. Somewhere there is a need to rethink our current reservation policy and work out a new policy that is useful to the citizens of the country and not limited to few caste of the country.
