The caste-based reservation in India have long been acting as a medium to act as vote banks for political parties as well as for certain communities to gain advantage of these reservations by violently demanding a quotas for them in Jobs and Education. Recent example is the Jat community’s violent protests in various cities of Haryana with Rohtak city suffering a lot from this stir and also delhi suffered the brunt of it as water and fuel supply were cut off and these protests have caused damages of crores of rupees along with loss of many lives. Besides, these senseless people do not understand as their this act of violence is also inciting the violent protests in other cities of India too, for example, the Patidars in Gujarat and Jats in Bharatpur asking for a quotas in job and education. At the same time, terrorists attacked in Pampore district of Jammu and Kashmir. So the army which might have assisted there with other comrades was stationed in many districts of Haryana for maintaining stability and peace which is sad as these people do not understand the situation and pit India is drowning in with many things going on at the same time with JNU protests and other events becoming the play sport of many political parties and it seems that India is in these dirty hands. The Government has also provided them assurance that they will be given separate ‘Jat’ quota which, I think, should not be given as constitutionally reservations might go above 50% which is against constitution and on the hand, this will act as an inspiration to other communities to resort to violent protests to gain their demands on quota reservations though these communities being well off educationally and financially as in case of Jat community.
The best option here is instead of granting the separate quota to these protesting communities, government should start doing away with the caste based reservation system in job and education sector. This will help in calming the uprising protests for reservations by various communities. The government should start its efforts to start reservations based on financial and social backwardness as this will help to curb the undue advantage of reservation by affluent classes which are listed in SC/ST/OBC categories and on the other hand, it will help to include poor people belonging to all the communities thereby benefitting all which was not the case in caste-based reservation system in which poor people from general category were not getting any benefit or exposure for their upliftment. So, It is the right time to do away with caste based reservation and stop the misuse of these quotas by political parties to act as vote banks and help the poor people to provide economic assistance in uplifting themselves if they are capable enough to get into job and education so that their poverty does not become hindrance to their upliftment.
