This week saw the loss of two great international cricketer from one day international after Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara retired from international cricket following their loss at the hands of South Africa in World Cup quarter finals. These two cricketers were known as the backbone of Sri Lankan cricket and together they end the era which saw them with TIlakratne Dilshan & co.
Kumar Sangakkara, who had played more than 400 ODIs and scored more than fourteen thousand run was the highest scorer in this world cup till date with four back-to-back centuries creating a new world record. Similarly, Mahela Jayawardene who had played 448 ODIs and scored more than tweleve thousand runs was one of the most consistent batsman of all time. Together they have featured in World XI , a number of times.
Together they have taken SriLanka into the finals twice, in World Cup 2007 and 2011 but could not make the team win. They were playing for their country for more than a decade and a half and finally bid the international cricket goodbye. They were known to be good friends, good cricketer and very good human beings in and out of the field. They have taken Srilankan cricket to a new heights after were Arjuna Ranatunga, Arvinda Desilva and Sanath jayasurya has left. It will be difficult for the Srilankan team to replace the two. They will not only be miss by Srilankan fans but every cricketer all over the world. A loss to the International Cricket.
